Need help getting an idea

I'm in 10th grade in Chemistry and I've tried asking my teacher if I can do any of the Advanced Medium ~ Hard and she said no to every single one of them for some reason. I need some help getting ideas to do my science fair because it's due soon and I'm out of ideas. Any help is appreciated, thanks!

Hello Vultux,

It would help us help you if you tell us which projects you selected and tell us the reasons your teacher gave as to why you couldn't do those projects.

Also tell us which area(s) you are most interested in. Doing a science project will take your time and effort, so you certainly want to select a project which interests you!

Hello.

She doesn't give reasons why she rejects an idea just says "no".

Anything would be interesting in my opinion, however, Chemistry seems to be something interesting.

It has to be something that can be done in a week or less and doesn't cost much.

Hope to hear from you soon!

Hello Vultux,
You could do a little experiment while searching for a project (grin)!

Search the Science Buddies projects using the search word "chemistry."

You will notice the projects are labeled "Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced", as well as "Easy, Medium, Hard".
In addition, the project summary tells you how long the project is expected to take as well as the cost.

You could start by selecting projects expected to take less than a week, and costing less than your limit.
Then within this list, select a few projects in each category, and see if your teacher rejects all of the projects, or, maybe only rejects the easy ones!

Hope this helps you zero in on an acceptable project!

This is exactly what I did for the ones I already sent to her and that she said no to :(

Hi Vultux,

I'm not an expert, but I was in your situation a couple of weeks ago. I totally understand how hard it is to get a good science fair project that's original, interesting and novel.

Here are two chemistry projects I'm personally interested in:

a) https://www.sciencebuddies.org/science- ... p088.shtml
b) https://www.sciencebuddies.org/science- ... p043.shtml

I also suggest looking at microbiology projects too. Here are some that are very interesting:

a) https://www.sciencebuddies.org/science- ... p029.shtml
b) https://www.sciencebuddies.org/science- ... p019.shtml
c) https://www.sciencebuddies.org/science- ... p031.shtml
d) https://www.sciencebuddies.org/science- ... p013.shtml

Petri dishes are extremely inexpensive, so microbiology projects should be rather inexpensive.

If you would like to work on an advanced project, do consider doing more research into projects you are interested in and try to expand on them. When is your project due?

Oh and by the way, ask your teacher why she is rejecting your project ideas. A good teacher should give constructive feedback. There has to be a reason why your projects seem unappealing to her.

If you still can't find any projects, try finding your local science fair and browse through past projects and winners. I always find that very useful.

Good luck! I really hope this helps!

Thanks! Some of those look nice but I only have about 5 days left because my teacher really bleep me over and wasted my time.

She says their not "good enough" and are too easy even though most people in my class are doing easy and dumb stuff.

I'll try to send some ideas that I can get the materials for fast and tell you what she says.

Hi Vultux,

Your teacher must have some kind of grudge on you  You can ask her for an extension if needed.

Hmm... If you only have 5 days left, I would suggest working on a variation of this project: https://www.sciencebuddies.org/science- ... #materials. The good thing about that project is that you can conduct multiple trials at the same time.

If you don't have access to the bacteria strain in the project outline, you can probably try baker's yeast? The experiment won't be about bacteria however, but it will be a nice model. If you can't access petri dishes, there are some diy petri dishes online in plastic containers. You will have to sterilize them though. Also if you do not have nutrient agar, here is a good tutorial on how to make gelatin plates that can grow yeast and some bacteria: https://www.madaboutscience.com.au/stor ... page&id=43

By the way for the project I mentioned in the beginning, try simplifying it some more so it doesn't take too long to carry out.

If you do that experiment, work on three trials at the same time. It should take you about 3-4 days to finish. Also do you have access to an incubator? If you do, incubate your dishes at 25-30 degrees celcius if you are not using gelatin plates. Gelatin plates will just melt and ruin everything.

That's all the help I can offer on that project so far. Good luck! I'm also working on my science project too :D .
