Why is the water pH on my college campus extremely acidic?

I am doing independent bio aquatic research on my college campus. Two of the three ponds that I tested came out with pH of 3 and 4-- acidity that matches that of acid rain. This is extremely unusual, so I redid the pH test and came up with the same results. Can a science professional or grad student explain to me what could cause the pH levels to be so acidic?? I know that heavy metals, pollution, runoff can impact acidity. However, my college campus is fairly green (sustainability wise). Another thought that I had was the amount of organic decay near the bodies of water, but I'm not sure if that could cause such acidic pH. Please help!!
