Hello bvallejo315,
I’m assuming that you’re working on the project described here:
https://www.sciencebuddies.org/science- ... ml#summary
The reaction is shown and explained in the background section of the project description. This way of showing a reaction sequence is often used when complex chemicals or multiple reaction steps are involved.
A less informative way of describing the reaction is the following equation:
C8H7N3O2 + 2NaOH + 2H2O2 ---> Na2C8H5NO4 + N2 + 4H2O
In brief, luminol (C8H7N3O2) reacts with hydroxyl ions (OH-) from sodium hydroxide and with oxygen to form the sodium salt of 5-aminophthalic acid (Na2C8H5NO4), nitrogen and water.
I hope this helps. Please ask again if you have more questions.
A. Norman
