Muscle and their names

Hi,
I'd like to know why the "Extensor Hallucis longus" is called "Extensor".
When the muscle is activated, the angle between origin and insertion decrease and the
1st distal phalanx get closer to the fibula.
When an angle decrease shouldn't be a "flexion" isn't it?
Thanks
Fabrizio
