Hi, I have a question regarding bacteria that may be harmful on paper money. I've read about it is best to wash your hands after handling it since many people can handle it. So I'm asking if it would be alright for me to microwave some of my money on a paper plate. How would I do it and for how long?

It is true that money gets exposed to a lot of bacteria since so many people handle it and money can be disinfected with the right methods. However, microwaving money can be potentially harmful. If you microwave it for more than a couple minutes, the ink can create fumes or you could end up destroying the bill. If the bill has a metallic strip, it can also burn holes in the bill. There aren't may ways to safely sanitize your money, but you can run it through a full wash/dry cycle in your washing machine in a pants pocket if it's particularly dirty. This process is also how the durability of US currency is tested before they are released for public use.
