Working in a lab

So yesterday was my first day attending the lab I was accepted to work in. I had a phone meeting and a meeting at his non university lab prior to coming in. The issue is that as my research teacher told us I asked him to help work in his lab this summer. But now that I enter the lab I don't know how I'm going to be able to get data for a project of my own. His lab ended up being small so I don't know how I will be able to do a project that isn't his exact project. I need some advice to get my own project going.

Congratulations on having a spot in the lab for the research project.

I recommend you talk with your advisor at the lab about your questions about how to also do some research of your own. If you are interning on a researcher's project, then working on that researcher's project is what I would expect you will be doing -- and the data will be part of that project.

Good luck,
