Baby Turtles: not a good choice for Science Projects

Due to the endangered status of most turtle species it is recommended that turtles be used in science investigations only through observation in their natural habitat. (http://www.nps.gov/archive/npsa/5Atlas/partr.htm, http://greennature.com/article174.html, http://www.hsus.org/wildlife/wildlife_n ... ation.html)

A possible alternative to a live turtle project would be to talk to your instructor about doing a 'research survey' of current work being done in the field on these amazing creatures. If that is not allowed by your instructor another option would be to investigate turtle habitats and work to identify the impact these environments have on natural selection (evolution) or the impact human habitation is having on these habitats (ecology).

Hi there,
Here are a few ideas to get you started with your science project involving turtles. If you didn't want to use "live" turtles for your project, you could try searching for websites that have satellite tracking programs on sea turtles, and study their migration. I'm not sure what grade you are in, but you can tailor these ideas to your grade level.

Here is a link to a website that gives some ideas such as studying the turtle life cycle :
http://pbskids.org/dragonflytv/show/turtles.html

This website has information on a sea turtle tracking program that would be interesting to study:

Hope these help get you started!

hi there

there are many studies that you could do regarding turtles but be prepared to fill out any forms regarding studies for animals... it may be difficult getting a signature for that...anyways an idea that i have can be with behavioral studies, observing different actions regarding the turtle baby turtle when exposed to different habitats
