How much soil to fill bread pan?

I'm doing a project similar to "Can Plants Stop Soil Erosion?" and I have to do a research plan. About how much soil (a specific number) would fill one bread pan?

I checked the project materials list (https://www.sciencebuddies.org/science- ... #materials) and it says you will need six 8-inch by 3-inch bread pans. So, your question is how much potting soil do you need to fill those pans.
I wasn't sure how to calculate the volume of soil needed based on the size of the pans so I went to a website that has examples of this: https://bonnieplants.com/library/how-ma ... g-of-soil/
They say that one 10-quart bag of potting soil will fill a 12-inch square planter, which would be 144 square inches in area. The 8 x 3 inch bread pans have an area of 24 square inches and 6 of them equals 144 square inches, so a 10-quart bag of potting soil should fill all of the pans exactly. However, the website did not mention the depth of the soil in the planter so I would buy a 15- or 20-quart bag of soil just in case you need more.
