How can I build an electromagnetic switch?

Course: Physics
Unit: Electromagnetism

My practical project for this unit is to build 2 circuits.

The first circuit must create an electromagnet. When this electromagnet is turned on, it must close a switch in the second circuit turning it on, and powering a light bulb.

Circuit 1: Electromagnet with a switch and battery

Circuit 2: A battery, a light, and a switch controlled by the electromagnet in circuit one.

The first circuit seems pretty simple. I will just wrap a nail or screw with conductive wire, and the current will also create a magnetic field.

I'm not clear with what to do with the second circuit. What should I use as a switch?

Hi AdibC,

You can create an electromagnetic switch simply by using a paperclip, piece of cardboard, and thumb tacks! This will allow you to control the flow of the current in the circuit. Here's a Youtube video you can watch that will clarify the procedure: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RWRPij5xlwY

Hope this helps!
