What is biodiversity ?

Hi,

I've always been puzzled by this question:Why is there more biodiversity near the equator? My guess was that it's due to the effect of the sun's rays and the angle that Earth is positioned, but are there other possible hypotheses of why this occurs? Also, is it possible to perform a research project on this topic and help other people understand my hypothesis using objects found in and around the home?

Thanks,

Hi Theo and welcome to scibuddies. Biodiversity-- the total number of different species in an ecosystem depends on a lot of factors. The average annual temperature is an important factor and land near the equator is subject to year-round warmth which encourages the growth of a myriad of plants and animals.

What is your hypothesis going to be? Biodiversity is not something that can be easily scaled for a science project, but you may be able to come up with something testable. Do you live near the equator?

Post again with more information about your proposal and we'll try to guide you into a great project.
