Science Buddies: "Ask an Expert"

Hi there!

I'm doing a project on how we could build a hydroponic greenhouse on Mars, so one of the first challenges that my greenhouse should overcome is: How would it be able to protect plants from radiation and atmospheric pressure?
What could I add to my greenhouse to resist those qualities of Mars? (Also, what can I do to make my greenhouse able to absorb and store the oxygen that the plants produce?)

This sounds like a great / fun project!

In response to your questions, you will need to add some level of radiation shielding using material such as lead. (The surface of Mars isn't radioactive so this may not be that big of an issue). In order to deal with the low atmospheric pressure, you may want to pressurize the greenhouse (similar to an airplane).
