Science Buddies: "Ask an Expert"

Hi< I 'm looking at all my options. Is the solubility project one that is done over and over again and therefore boring to judges, although it wouldn't be boring for me? What are your thoughts for a sixth grade project?

If this particular project interests you: go for it! One of the hallmarks of a good science fair project is passion. If you are doing a project that you actually care about and want to do, you will do a better project and stand out to the judges.

Another thing that separates top-notch science fair projects from the rest is a student's knowledge of the principles governing their experiment. Anyone can measure how long it takes for different ibuprofen tablets to dissolve, but only a truly passionate and dedicated student will explain why. Answering the "why" question is a key component of a super science project.

I agree with Terik, go with your passion with what excites you! And yes, know why, but also take it a step further and ask what happens next.

Recently scientists have found that there are many medications in the water supply. What does this do to the animals, plants and bacteria in the water? Do these medications get back into the drinking supply? You can do a quick Google search and find some good references that relate to the experiment.

Also there is a recent study by some scientist in Canada where they found red-headed woman have a gene that makes them more tolerant to pain-thus need less pain killers (Ibuprofen). They actually found the gene in red-haird mice and then looked for and found it in red-headed women. How cool is that?
