Develop a method of sending a message across the room using only colors and shapes (no writing). You should be able to handle any message (including punctuation) up to twenty characters long

I'm assuming that you want some advice on how to get started with your project.
Based on the objective that you posted I think you have an engineering project. You might want to take a look at the Science Buddies project guide to review the engineering project process:

Some online searching will probably turn up several methods of communicating with shapes or colors.
I'm sure you'll find some ideas to help you get started with developing a method that meets your objective.
