Science Buddies: "Ask an Expert"

Hello, I am doing a project on "Which Filtration Material Leads to the Best Drinking Water?" I saw this project on this website (Science Buddies). On the materials list it says that you are to use: Granulated activated charcoal and Powdered activated charcoal. Then, on the procedure section it says to use: granular activated carbon, powdered activated carbon and no activated carbon. I am confused, which one is it?, activated carbon or activated charcoal. Please let me know asap, my materials and procedure science paper is due on 3/25/19, if you could answer me before that date I would appreciate it ! Thank you!

I'm assuming that you are working on the project described here:

The terms “activated carbon” and “activated charcoal” refer to the same material and these terms are often interchanged. “Activated carbon” may be the somewhat preferred term and I suggest you use it for your report.

I have a question on the procedure , it says to label 3 cups per each type of carbon (Granulated activated carbon, powdered activated carbon, and no carbon.) The label should include the form of carbon and what dye concentration you will use (0, 2 or 5 drops per cup of liquid) for that cup. For example, if I am using granular activated carbon for the three cups, do I label each cup: GAC, 0 drops per cup liquid, then the next cup GAC, 2 drops per cup of liquid, and lastly GAC, 5 drops per cup of liquid? Or do we just chose one dye concentration for each form of carbon? For example: GAC, 2 drops per cup of liquid and so on for the remaining 2 cups?

I am very sorry if this is hard to understand, it's complicated to explain what I want to say
Note: GAC means Granulated Activated carbon

Hi Doglovejustice,

The project procedure calls for preparing a total of nine labelled cups. You should have three cups, one for each dye concentration, for each carbon type. Please see step 2 under “Preparing Your Samples and Fillers” for more details on this.

Since we have to repeat the whole process 3 times, do we have to repeat the "Preparing you samples and filters" section?
