Science Buddies: "Ask an Expert"

Ok so me and my wife are in a debate about someone giving away a free car seat and booster seat as well. She says they arent safe and especially not good if they were previously in a wreck. My comment was that sometimes people that have no money could use free stuff like that. And as an example I'd much rather someone with no financial resources to use a used car seat rather then a bare seat in the car. Some protection is better then no protection. She argued back saying it wouldn't do anything for them if it was in a previous wreck and I said again i believe something is better than nothing like neck support or so on. I'm not a crash expert and neither is she but from a scientific standpoint what would the science world think.
