Science Buddies: "Ask an Expert"

Hi, I need an science project that addresses a sustainability issue. I must design and conduct a research project that creates, trials and reports on a product or process orientated towards solving an identified problem/issue in personal or community practices. And ideas would be helpful. Thank you.

To me, something pertaining to diet and weight loss or gain is an obvious and relevant possibility. This would depend on how much time you have to complete the project, and having a bunch of willing volunteers (at least 10, and of both sexes) who could stick to a different diet than they are used to. The variable here might be having one group eat a salad for dinner each day. Over the course of, say a month or two, you could interview each particpant with a set of questions to determine how easy or hard it was to stick to that diet. Diets are useful only if you can stick to them (ie sustainability).

By sustainability, I assume you are referring to sustainable practices involving the environment. I've actually been transitioning into a more sustainable lifestyle for a couple months now, so I'm excited to hear that your project will be addressing a sustainability issue.
