How do you calculate the spin rate of a soccer ball when trying to determine how spin will affect its trajectory?

Hello Jen Morris and welcome to Science Buddies!

Are you planning a hands-on science project involving spin rates? If so, please tell us more details about your project including your hypothesis and what sort of experiments you plan.

Science Buddies has a database with over 1000 projects. You can search the database for specific keywords or you can just browse. Here's an example of a project involving spin and trajectory.

Hi Jenmorris,

I don't believe it's possible to measure the angular speed of a soccer ball after you've launched it. Rather, you would have to set an initial angular speed before launching the soccer ball, then measure how far it goes. This sounds like an interesting project; let us know if you need more help!

Hope this helps,
