Listerine Melts and Fortune Teller Fish

I run a Science Saturday program at the public library and was planning for one featuring fortune teller fish. I have my information for the fish prepared and then came across the idea that Listerine melts will also curl up in your hand. Does anyone have a middle school/older elementary appropriate description for why they melts show the same reaction as the fish? Thank you.

Hi ssaxby,

My understanding is that Listerine melts absorb moisture and/or heat on one side, causing a rapid expansion on that side. The opposite side stays a roughly similar size, and the only way to accommodate the differences in areas is for the strip to curl.

I hope that helps. Please let us know if you have any more questions.

Best,
Charles
