Alternate Plates for MSM Agar Plates

Hello!

I am doing a science experiment to test the biodegradation of polyester polyurethane by Aspergillus tubingensis (a fungi). I am supposed to use MSM agar plates, but I cannot find anywhere to buy them online, and they seem to be too complicated to make myself. Can I use other types of plates? If so, what kinds?

Thank you so much!! :)

Hi there!

Do you know exactly why MSM plates are recommended? I can't speak for certain, but if you are really having trouble acquiring MSM, see if potato dextrose agar or Sabouraud agar will serve as an appropriate alternative. Both are well-suited for plating fungi. When I did a project on fungus several years ago, I used Sabouraud plates. I was able to get my hands on them pretty easily. Potato dextrose is also a very commonly used medium and you should be able to find it with little issue.

Remember that you should always handle agar plates carefully to avoid contaminating your results!

Eugene is correct about the Sab agar for growing Aspergillis.
