Science Buddies: "Ask an Expert"

Hello,

I am interested in doing drug solubility as my science project where I compare different pill capsules (gel caps, tablets, caplets, etc.) and see which type dissolves faster in water. My only question is does the length and amount of the medicine inside the pill effects the rate it dissolves at.

I would find the same medicines with different types of capsules(same type and size), this way the medicine itself isn’t being changed, it wouldn’t have any impacts on your variables.

I agree with what the previous responder suggested; generally, the more solute you have, the longer it will take to dissolve. You want everything to be as consistent as possible so your results are the most accurate they can be. I'd suggest using a common medicine such as acetaminophen (also under the brand name Tylenol) because you'll be able to find it in various forms, often times with the same dosage. A quick Google search shows that you can find a lot of options for 500 mg, including gel caps, tablets, caplets, rapid release, and extended release. If you find rapid or extended relief options, it may be worthwhile to look into what gives the medicine this effect.
