For the Candy Chromatography project is it optional to use food dye?
Yes!
Although then, it would not be considered "candy" chromatography but simply food-dye chromatography.
Chromatography is a laboratory technique for the separation of a mixture, so really any mixture or coloring should work to achieve the purpose of the lab.
