Science Buddies: "Ask an Expert"

How do you write science articles (not academic journals) to help spread awareness about what is going on with the plastic pollution in oceans? How do I find out how much plastic pollution is hitting different states? How do I find numbers without conducting quantifiable research? How do I get started.

The Science Buddies Ask an Expert forum is geared towards helping students with conducting their own projects, e.g. for science fairs.

I'll also add scholar.google.com as a tool for searching through academic journals, similar to a library database.
