Nail Polish Chemical Affects on Humans?

So I was doing a science project and I decided that I would try the thing where you put nail polish in water and marble a paper for decoration. Then it started to smell really bad and I got a headache. We let the room air out, but I am just wondering if I will be okay. Like does it have any harmful side affects? I honestly don't feel good and I want to go to sleep, but I have to finish my project. I wish I had never seen that on Pinterest (it looks really cool, but it wasn't worth it). Also, should I still turn it in? I don't want the nail polish to give my science teacher a headache like it gave me. Another question, does nail polish contain latex? We aren't allowed to bring latex to school (but then people wear nail polish all the time, so I don't know).

Hello Anna_Overstreet,

I'm so sorry to hear about your experience. I hope you are feeling a little better now. Since nail polish is such a common product, there is most likely no reason to worry about this incident. If you are ever worried about your health, it is always best to contact your healthcare provider. Also, remember that your health is always more important than your academic life.

For the future, it is important to keep in mind that nail polishes may contain potentially harmful chemicals such as dibutyl phthalate (which increases flexibility), toluene (a thinning agent), and formaldehyde (which is used for a variety of purposes). It is always a good idea to ventilate your workspace when using chemicals. Additionally, you should prevent long-term exposure to these chemicals.

Yes, some nail polishes contain latex. You can always read the ingredients on the container.

I hope this does not discourage you from any future science experiments -- with the right safety precautions, science can be safe and fun! If you are still working on this project or have any questions in the future, you can always ask us here!

Have a good day,
Emma
