As part of my project, I need to explain why we use the name but-1-ene instead of butene, although they have the same organic structure. How do I explain why but-1-ene is chosen?
Thank you!!

Hello there,
It's worth doing a little bit of your own research for this to have a more complete answer, but long story short: "but-1-ene" is more specific than "butene." But-1-ene is one version (or isomer) of butene. This should give you a quick illustration:

It's probably worth digging into
why exactly this matters for your project. We'd be happy to help with that if you could offer more details about what you're doing.
Hope that helps.
