Suggested Amperage for electromagnet

Hello,
I am a Sophomore student working on my science fair project. I am applying varying magnetic field strengths to plasmas to see how the voltage change over the ionized gas. My theory is that if ionized gas is condensed into a tighter stream, the energy will flow easier through the ions. I am using a type of cathode-ray tube to form the plasma. I am still unsure what the range of amperage should be for the small electromagnet I am using.
