Do elements in Group 4a (14) Have a Charge of 4+ or 4-

I am studying Chemistry, and can't find anything about Group 4a (14) of the periodic table. Do the ions in this group have a charge of positive 4 or negative 4. One source said that they have either, and I would like to know how you differentiate.
