When I had an invertebrate animals topic, one of my students asked why did they name 'Sea Jellies' if they live in the ocean. Maybe anyone can help?

That’s a very interesting question! It’s nice to hear that your students are so curious!

I did a bit of research and found a lot of information about sea jellies, but I didn’t find a clear answer to this question, although I did find some facts that might be helpful.

Sea jellies can also be referred to as just “jellies,” and it seems as if the “sea” part of the name is encompassing the fact that they are found in aquatic settings. Furthermore, the term “seawater” can refer to both water in the ocean and seas, so the words are sometimes used interchangeably. Although there is a difference geographically (seas are smaller than oceans and typically located near coasts), many articles I’ve read have explained that sea jellies are found throughout oceans and in areas that are considered seas.
