Help starting on Science Fair project

Post by EllaR8 »

For my chemistry class I have to participate in the Science Fair.
I was looking at some ideas on the website and came across two that peaked my interest: Playing Music and Solving Logic Problems.
There is no procedure which is fine but I was just wondering how one would go about starting these projects.
I am not allowed to do human or vertebrate testing.
I know my question isn't very specific but I would really appreciate it if someone could please give me a little guidance on these projects.
Thanks!

Hello, both of these projects appear to have a strong math component to them. There is also a math and computer science forum and the experts there may be able to give you better guidance!

Hi - Both of the projects that caught your eye are "Abbreviated Project Ideas" at Science Buddies that do require you to develop your own procedure. If having an existing procedure would help, you can look for other projects. The ones that have a * at the end of the title are abbreviated.

For all other projects, in addition to the procedure outlined, there are usually "variations" at the end which give suggestions for ways you can customize or extend the project in new ways.

The topic selection wizard would be a good tool to try, too, if you didn't already:

I think a number of the math projects are abbreviated. But you might find a project which lets you see how a procedure on a similar topic (like using algorithms, for instance) was constructed. That might help with the topics you've found interesting.

There are examples of projects related to algorithms and to music that I could point out, but you said that you need to do this project for your chemistry class? You may need to be looking at projects that are in a specific area of science? If you can do a project on anything:

Here are two projects related to algorithms for Rubik's cube:

Here are several music-related ones to get you started looking at other options:

@AmyCowen you did not help me at all. I asked if you could help me get started on the project and instead you just told me information that I already know.

Since you were unsure how to start your project, my suggestion was to look at some of the projects that do have a procedure.

If you want to use one of the two projects you identified, then to get started, you would need to decide what exactly you are interested in doing the project about -- what science question you will be exploring. And then you need to research the terms noted.

For example, in the Playing Music project (https://www.sciencebuddies.org/science- ... ying-music), there are a number of different things mentioned. You would have to do research to decide what it is, exactly, you are looking to explore.
