Science Buddies: "Ask an Expert"

Hi! This project is really fascinating and my friends and I chose it for our final physics project. I had a few questions regarding the materials.
1. Would it work fine if we use 1 inch magnet (instead of half inch)?
2. If yes, would we have to make any changes to the size of our speaker?
3. Here are two links found for magnets available locally, which one is better?

Hi - you need to use neodymium or "rare earth" magnets for this project, also abbreviated NdFeB, which stands for neodymium (Nd), iron (Fe), and boron (B). It looks like the first link you posted is not neodymium. You could use a stack of the magnets from your second link. It looks like those are half inch. If you did use 1-inch diameter neodymium magnets, you would need to be very careful because they are extremely strong. You would also need to increase the diameter of the wire coil in your paper speaker to fit around the magnet. Hope that helps,
