Hi there,

The movement of the hanging cup simulates a real seismograph and how it draws the squiggly line. The heavy hanging cup acts like a pendulum, like real seismographs, drawing squiggly lines with the pen attached to it. However, the cup does not swing around a lot because of its heavy mass, which allows the drawn line to stay within the boundaries of the paper which gives more precise readings.
