What are simple home-done projects in petroleum engineering using simple tools?

Just so that I can narrow your search down, do you know what you want to accomplish in this kind of a project? As in, do you want to explore ways of extracting oil? Or seeing what types of rocks have the most oil? Or is there something else you want to look into?
