The material restrictions dictate a lot of your design choices. What are the straws made out of and how many can you use?
Break it down into simpler problems. How do you resist the gravitational force acceleration? How do you absorb landing forces to reduce stresses on the egg?

There is no limit on the straws... they didn't actually provide the material, just a descrption, and did not provide a limit...

Plastic straws with 1/4 to 5/16 inch diameter might make a good roll cage and crumple zone.
