Ah, the marsh. The nature's recovery system for a polluted area.

For a 3rd grader, a marsh is a perfect project to present various subjects about:

1. Wild life exists in the different marshes environments.

2. The different species of living things, which always stay in balance. One more or one less thing in the balance of species will throw everything off.

3. How the marsh cleans up the pollutions from the urban/suburban area.

4. Why marshes exist.

5. And if you want to kick it up to the 5th and 6th grader level, how about multi-effects of the micro-biotic species within the marsh. Very unique in the research.

I can list on and on and on. Chose one, and best of luck.

Here are a few ideas and guides on how to build a model of a marsh that are on the web. They list the materials needed and some have ideas for demonstrations to show a pollution spill, etc.

The following is a link to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) that has great resources and info for your project on wetlands, marshes, etc.
