Science Buddies: "Ask an Expert"

Hi!

I am in my final school year and I need to do a really good experimental project.

I was thinking about dong somthing concerning microwaves, investigating how and why they effect things in a different manner to stoves etc. and I was wondering if I would be able to find enough detailed information on this topic.

It is important that both research and experimental work are done for this project, and that the end result is not simple but interesting.

Please help me with any ideas as to what exactly I could do on the experimental side and whether you think this topic is good enough. I have quite a bit of time and I reaaly want this to be good.

It's always good advice to try and come up with a specific experiment that you're interested in and excited about. Hopefully you've already looked through the helpful resources on the front page of https://www.sciencebuddies.org.

Regarding microwaves, to generate some ideas and get you thinking, I'd suggest doing a Google search on "microwave experiments". People with lots of enthusiasm (and sometimes dubious levels of common sense) have tried putting all sorts of things in microwave ovens to see what happens. Many of these web pages have videos as well as an attempt to scientifically explain what happened.

Obviously, keep in mind that MANY microwave experiments can be very dangerous, even when you take proper precautions. Please don't neglect to consult with your science teacher or other adult mentor before conducting your experiment.
