Science Buddies: "Ask an Expert"

Hi,
I have to make a system that can efficiently move a 200 pound block up an inclined plane 30 degrees with the horizontal with the help of a 1HP motor and whatever "standard" materials and equipments to be used. Calculations and sketches are also required. The due date for the project is march 5th 2009 and i have no idea even how to start the project.

Start by looking in a Physics text to learn about inclined planes pulleys, and gear ratios. Look up the definition of horsepower. Finally look up the characteristics of your particular 1 hp motor. Can it start under load? What is the stalling torque or maximum startup torque.

You might find what you want by Googling under simple machines, inclined planes, and the like.
Remember ideas develop from knowledge. Whenever I'm stumped by a problem, I read as much about it as I can find.
