Science Buddies: "Ask an Expert"

Okay well I found this project on Science buddies and you basically study the genes and determine what is wrong with the genes. However my teacher says to change some of the diseases. Should I? Or should I Just leave it and keep the cancer diseases that it offers? I also need help researching about these disease can you reccomend any textbooks or books? Possibly websites? Thank you!

Hi Tjador,

I think keeping a focus on cancer should be fine, there are many resources on the web that have good information. Many cancers are caused by disregulation of protein kinases (ie. enzymes that add phosphate to other proteins). For many cancers, the specific kinase (and mutation) is known so it might be worth concentrating on a couple of these and looking at the associated protein.

I have found some general links on protein kinases and cancer in wikipedia which should give you enough information to get started.

Thank you for the help however My teachers do not trust wikipedia and nor do is there any other websites in refrence to this topic? If not can you reccomend some textbooks possibly? Thank You!

I can understand your reservations about wikipedia. Certainly there are many textbooks which can be referenced, just search online. I would however say, that the information on the wikipedia pages I referenced in my previous posts is accurate and the wikipedia pages also have the advantage of being constantly updated. If you have a specific page that you think is inaccurate, I would be happy to take a look.
