hi my 10th grade science fair project is how frac water will effect the growth of plants. My biology teacher has told me to reseach the LC 50 of Frac water but i can not find ANYTHING about it. So i was wondering if yall could tell me how to find it that would be helpful. Thx!

Hi,

I do not think you will find any information for the water itself, but you could instead research the contents of the water, look up their LC50's, and then find out what their concentrations in the water are.

Try looking up the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) for each chemical. Here is a site that has a bunch of MSDSs: http://www.msds.com/. It may not have every chemical you need, though, so you may have to do some additional searching. Here's another site that has a lot of them: http://hazard.com/msds/. The sheets are very involved, but they usually have LD or LC50s on them.

Hi Haleboy,
Frac water composition may vary by source. A strategy that you may explore is determining the toxicity of a specific frac water source (i.e. from a particular industrial source or location), rather than identifying the toxicity of frac water in general. You can prepare dilutions of the frac water that you have acquired and test the effect of the different dilutions on the growth of your plant of choice. Hope this points you into a fruitful direction!
