I have Black Powder and I want to do an experiment with it but I don't know how to use it to conduct a science experiment on a 9th grade level. Can someone please give me some ideas that would help me to make the experiment on a 9th grade level?

The simple answer is don't! I started my career working as an explosives technician in 1954, after military service (where I did have explosives training). One of the first things I learned was that black powder is one of the more dangerous explosives, according to the old time mining explosive experts I worked with.

Although I later got my degree and advanced to senior scientist grade, I kept an interest in explosives and I still consult in that area.

Besides safety issues, anything involving explosives causes most folks (including teachers and science fair judges) to really have a cow.

Hi Sciencedork101,

I agree that you're likely to run into safety issues with black powder, perhaps including paperwork that would make the whole thing a lot less fun... However, the good news is that we do have lots of science projects ideas for you to look through. There's a topic selection wizard here:

https://www.sciencebuddies.org/science- ... gister.php

and a directory organized by subject area here:

https://www.sciencebuddies.org/science- ... deas.shtml

After choosing a subject, you can click 'show harder ideas' near the top to make sure the projects displayed are at your grade level. Let us know when you find something interesting, especially if you have any questions about it!
