Hello and welcome to the forums.
When you say "too much information", are you referring to the data collected or your research? With regards to data collection, the key is to answer this question from the Science Buddies guide
https://www.sciencebuddies.org/science- ... ysis.shtml:
Is there sufficient data to know whether your hypothesis is correct?
.
I know that a lot of teachers require a background research section in a science fair project. Note that the Science Buddies guide does not include such a section. Here is what the guide says:
Most of the sections are made up of information that you have already written.
We would be glad to give some more specific information if you could let us know what it is you need. Thanks!
Keith

As kgudger said, can you be more specific? We can help you more if we have a better idea of what you are asking.
Also, I just wanted to point out that Science Buddies does have a section on background research. It can be found here:
http://www.sciencebuddies.com/science-f ... ndex.shtml
Just look at the left side called "How to Do a Science Fair Project" and under that there is a section called "Doing Background Research" which includes:
Background Research Plan
Finding Information
Bibliography
Research Paper
