Year or day as manipulated variable

Can we use years or days as manipulated variable in an experiment.

For example:
The table below shown the number of turtle left from year 2000-2005.

year | 2000 | 2001 | 2002 | 2003 | 2004 | 2005 |
the number of turtle left 500 450 400 350 300 250

Yes, years (time in general) is fine to use as the manipulated (independent) variable.
