There are a lot of different ways to write about a science project. It depends a lot on how complicated your project is, and for what reason you are writing about it.
If you are doing it as a class project, your teacher may have given you some specific instructions. If that is the case, I recommend you ask your teacher this question.
Here at Science Buddies, we have instructions on how to do a science project and how to write about it. You can see our explanation here:

Look at the thing called "Abstract". This is what you'll need to include in your writing as the "background".
Have fun.

As was said, the best thing to do first would be to ask your teacher what he/she expects from you. This way you don't end up doing more or doing less that what is required.
Hope this helps and have fun with your research and project !!

My project is on exercise to! I am trying to find out if exercise can effect cognitive function if you exercise for 10 minutes. I would ask your teacher, but background research can be anywhere from 50 words to 1000 words it depends on what the teachers expectations are and how much research you can find.
Hope that helps,
