It calls for a horticultural sand.It seems that there is not any in the United States. I found an article that someone found builder sand that was coarse and uses it in their garden. But will it serve our need for the science fair project ? mmmm?

I have checked at Lowes, HomeDepot, & Tractor Supply

Hello vmacguire. Sounds like an interesting project!

I did a quick search for "horticultural sand" online and found it for sale on Ebay and Amazon.com for about $10.

Science Buddies has an affiliation with Amazon.com, which both offer Science Buddies a referral fee of 10% of any order submitted through special links within our Project Ideas.

Good luck!

Thanks Deanna:

I only found it on Ebay.I hoped to find it locally because of the shipping cost.I am spending more money than I intended on paying.I wish I saw your email before I went to Lowes again today. Some one told me to go to the builder section.I found some allpurpose coarse sand - grey -it said it was for gardening but when I got it home it said that it had possibility of these chemicals called Chrystalline & Sillca.I dont know if the horticulutural sand has that it in there but I didnt know how safe that would be for us, plus you have to sterilize in the oven-wasnt sure about what types of fumes will be set off.Now back to the drawing board.Guess I need a prepaid credit card- I dont have paypal or those other things.
Thanks again Deanna

Signed Desperate-wish we could change the topic now but its too late.Hope I get some soon.I am ready to start and end it.

Hmmm. You're right! I tried searching again for local stores and couldn't find anything for "horticultural sand" in the USA. The most popular recommendation I found was to look for any "coarse" sand found at gardening supply stores. Did you try going to a gardening store like "Star Nursery?" Try calling a few gardening stores instead of home supply stores. Gardening stores may stock more specific brands of stuff than a store like Home Depot. They may also help you identify a sand suitable for gardening. In looking at the project description, I believe your target is to find any type of sand suitable for gardening....coarser than beach sand (for drainage) and free of lime. I couldn't tell you whether Chrystalline & Sillca are harmful to plants. Again, the folks at the gardening store may be able to shed some light for you. I wouldn't get hung up on the term "horticultural sand," as long as you can find a sand that is made specifically for gardening.

After reading the statement again on the supplies and materials page, I think the 10% discount at Amazon only applies to certain items you would have to link to through the science fair topic page, and your topic doesn't have any such links to Amazon. My apologies for steering you in the wrong direction on that.

I hope this helps, and I hope you can find what you're looking for. Sounds like an interesting project. IGood luck!
Deana

You are quite welcome. Did you find the right sand?
