Science Buddies: "Ask an Expert"

I am a 10th grade Lynbrook student and I was wondering if there are any sort of science fair topic that are original and sort of in the medium dificulty range? I was thinking of doing something to do with neutralizing an acid through the use of an all purpose base, this could be used in both hospitals and labs to stop the corrosive nature of an acid by diluting. Am in the right track? And if I am, how can I experiment this and create a theory if I am not really able to get a laboratory. Do I have to ask a nearby college or my high school for asistance?

Have you looked at the Science Budies Project Idea Guide? You can use the project selection wizard in it to have projects suggested to you based on your interests, or you can browse the entire collection to find projects of interest to you. Each of the projects is rated for difficulty. Your post suggests you are interested in chemistry projects. The link is:

The idea you identified might also fall under the category of Environmental cleanup of chemical spills (acid or base). You may want to investigate acid base neutralization as well. You can also discover lots of neat stuff by using Google (www.google.com) to search for answers to any question. You sound like you have not yet taken a chemisty class. If this is true you might want to check your local public library for a chemistry textbook - almost any such text can tell you about acids and bases and how they react. This is really interesting stuff!
