My son is in the 8th grade and I am helping him with the test group questions for both the bar graph and US map outline with the state 2 letter abbreivations. The science project is called the Interpreting Area Data from Maps vs. Grpahs: An Experiment in Visual Perception.

We are have difficulty coming up with questions for both test groups. all the questions we have have to do with the comparison of the smallest states and the largest. But those question seem really easy.

Please help.

Hi,

This is a very interesting project. I think you are doing this project:

I assume that one group of your test subjects will be looking a map and one will be looking at a bar graph of the areas of the states.

Here are some suggestions for specific questions.

You can ask about states that have a similar area to your home state. You can ask what states would equal the area of Texas; you could ask if Utah, Colorado, Arizona, or New Mexico is larger; you could ask if Kentucky or Tennessee is larger, you could ask what the second largest state after Texas; you could ask if Arkansas or Iowa is larger. You could ask for the state that is closest in size to New Hampshire.

Hopefully this will help you get started on your visual quiz.

Good luck!
