Steel wire size for recording on a wire

Hi, you provide the recommended size for the magnet wire needed for the project (34awg) but not the recording wire. I have some but I think it may be too small. Can you recommend a good size? Thank you!

Good question. This website: http://www.videointerchange.com/wire_recorder1.htm has a lot of information about wire recorders, including a micrograph of it next to a human hair.

Recording wire is quite thin, about 38 gauge if my calculations are correct. It also has to be steel, not copper or other non-ferromagnetic material. That's why the experiment suggests getting wire made for this purpose on eBay. It doesn't seem to be that hard to find... e.g.: http://cgi.ebay.com/Webster-Chicago-1-H ... 27b8da301e (note, I don't know anything about this vendor, so do your own research).
