Science Buddies: "Ask an Expert"

Hello,
I'm in college, but there was no option for college students to ask questions! I'm doing my microbiology lab experiment from one of the choices from your web site: How well do disinfectants work? My question is for this project, what is my independent, dependent, and controlled variables? I don't know why I always struggle to understand these concepts! Any input I would greatly appreciate!
