Vague ideas- in over my head?

I want to create a project for the Vermont State Science Fair (with luck- maybe ISEF? although at the rate I'm going probably not.
Anyway, I know that I want to work with astronomy and astrophysics. I live nearby Dartmouth university, which has professors doing original research in astrophysics, astrometry, etc. I also know I have 8-12 hours a week at the least that I can put into this project.
However... that's pretty much all I know. I began doing research online (Google Scholar is fantastic) but im slowly realizing that I'm in far over my head and the concepts are too complicated for me to understand without someone explaining it to me. My schools science program is lacking to say the least, so I don't have anyone there that could explain to me anything I don't already know.
But isn't it a bit preemptive to start emailing professors and looking into mentors? I feel like I would not be doing anything else but making a fool of myself if I ask for help understanding their research. But if I don't talk to a professor, there's nowhere to go from here.
