Here is the Science Buddies article about Afterimages. I recommend that you do background research on the science behind afterimages (how the brain perceives these images and what happens throughout the whole process from eye to brain).

I am not sure who is the "inventor" or the first to report the afterimage effect, but Ewald Hering did do work on this topic.
