I am helping a team of 2 students doing a science project and one of them is visiting Asia for a vacation. They wanted to do something that they can compare when one is in Asia and other in U.S. I suggested astronomy project, but wanted to see what are other things the students can do. They are in 6th grade.

Regards

Kumar

Hello bumblebee27,

What an interesting idea. Unfortunately, I can't think of a really good idea. The key to a good project is to think about what kind of observations they are equipped to make. For example, if they each had a radiation detector, they could both make measurements of background radiations in as many places as possible and try to sort out what might cause the variations. However, I doubt they will have this equipment. How about surveying the electromagnetic radiations field? An EMF field meter is available at Amazon for about $25US. http://www.amazon.com/Technology-Altern ... 602&sr=8-2.

Along the line of astronomy, how about each student doing the project described at https://www.sciencebuddies.org/science- ... p022.shtml. Again, the more measurements the better to see how much variation they can find.

Good luck, WW

Another suggestion may be "Calculating the Circumference of the Earth"
Science Buddy link provided below:
https://www.sciencebuddies.org/science- ... p018.shtml

Time: required Short (several days)
Prerequisites: You will need to understand some basic principles of geometry for this project. You will need a friend or relative in a distant city to make a shadow measurement for you on the same day you make yours. Both of you will need clear weather.
Material: Availability Readily available
Cost: Very Low (under $20)

Thanks Anthony. This seems to be interesting one. I will suggest this to them and see what they think about it.
