Do you think water’s temperature will affect the rate of a chemical reaction? Why?
Why does an Alka- Seltzer tablet dissolve in water?
What does an Alka- Seltzer tablet release when it dissolves in water? How?
At what point do you think water’s temperature will no longer have any effect on the rate of a chemical reaction? Why?
What is in an Alka- Seltzer tablet that makes it fizz and cause this reaction to occur?
These questions are for my science research paper. It is due on December 16, 2011.

Hi,
Welcome to Science Buddies! Are you doing this project? It's a really one and you are going to learn a lot about science in doing it.
https://www.sciencebuddies.org/science- ... p027.shtml
Your project is the study of a specific chemical reaction: dissolving Alka-Selzer. The specific chemical reaction showing the reaction of bicarbonate ions with citric acid is included in the introduction section of the project outline. Do you understand what is shown in the reaction equation? What do the H, C and O's stand for? The ingredients for Alka-Selzer are shown on the left side of the equation and the products of the chemical reaction are shown on the right. There are a few atoms that are unchanged and are not included in the reaction. Do you know what the missing atoms are?
3HCO3- + 3H+ ----->3 H2O + 3CO2
One of the references includes a good description of the effect of temperature on a chemical reaction:

Based on this reference, do you think the Alka-Selzer will dissolve faster in the cold or hot water?
The project outline suggests using ice water, cold tap water, and hot tap water. Can you think of a way to test lower and higher temperatures? The only way to find out what happens at a specific temperature is to actually do the experiment.
If you will read through all of the references, you will have all of the background information you need to write a really excellent research paper. Please do let me know if you need additional explanation on any of the topics.
